The experience
The birth house of the man who in 1903 became the 257th bishop of Rome with the name Pius X, Giuseppe Sarto, was donated by Maria Sarto, his sister, in 1926 to the municipality of Riese. The complex consists not only of the house but also the museum, restored in 1985 for the visit of Pope John Paul II and in 2023 for the peregrinatio corporis of St. Pius X.. Every year the complex is visited by thousands of people.
The house consists of only a few rooms, and the last restoration was done by Giuseppe Sarto himself shortly before he became pope. Inside the museum, on the other hand, you have a number of objects belonging to the pontiff that tell the story of his life from childhood until his death in 1914. Pope Pius X, is an extremely heartfelt figure in the area as he came from a modest country family, the son of a seamstress and a farmer and a slider in the Habsburg administration.
He was one of two popes from Veneto; the second was Pope John Paul I, at birth Albino Luciani (1912-1978) from Canale d’Agordo.
