The experience

The Murano Glass Museum was built in 1961 on the island of the same name in the Venetian lagoon, at the behest of Abbot Vincenzo Zanetti and the then Mayor of the City Antonio Colleoni. The two, following the fall of the Serenissima, decided to create an archive in Murano that could collect the history of the City and especially of the island itself.

A number of collections and glass objects then began to arrive, which, over time, became the main part of the archive.

Abbot Vincenzo Zanetti, in 1862, a year after the opening of the museum-archive, decided to build attached to the complex a school useful for the Island’s glassmakers to study the techniques used in the past.

Since 1923, Murano has been part of the Municipality of Venice and consequently the museum has come under the Foundation of the Civic Museums of Venice. Nowadays, in addition to the various purchases made to increase the collection, the collection expands through donations from the furnaces and master glassmakers operating on the Island.

Before visiting the museum or afterwards, we also recommend that you visit the Original Murano Glass OMG Furnace & Showroom where you can see, hear and touch the skills and stories of the master glassmakers who carry out this work passed down from generation to generation. You will be able to watch glassblowing and sculptural glass modeling.

Following the visit, you can go through the showroom where you can purchase a unique glass object that, when you look at it years later, will bring back memories of this unforgettable experience.
