Marostica is one of the walled cities of the Veneto region. Here, one of the most important historical events at the Italian level takes place: the living chess game. The match takes place in Castle Square in September (in 2024 from the 6th to the 8th) and its origins date back to as far as 1454, during the rule of the Serenissima.

According to legend, in 1454 two noble warriors decided to clash to win the daughter of the castellan. They opted to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, to fight each other in a game of chess.

Even today this event is repeated every two years and brings with it the mobilization of more than 550 participating people. The match is the culmination of a more complex folkloric event.

In all, there are about 3,600 numbered seats, and the event lasts about 2 hours.
