Piero fa la Merica: two meetings with authors of migration

22 February 2024

2 minutes

Comes “Once Upon a Time in Merica.Venetian emigration to Brazil between reality and fiction.“. New meeting with an author about Venetian emigration abroad. To keep alive the link between lands of origin and their descendants, the Municipal Library “Luigi Pianca” of Godega di Sant’Urbano is offering a cultural evening with free admission to reflect on the theme of Venetian emigration. The community will meet on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 8:30 pm with author Paolo Malaguti.

Roots Tourism itineraries also lead to rediscovering the history of migration. Research over many years by different authors allows us to relive part of that common history where the past blends with the present in a timeless embrace. Every word, every page tells millennia-old stories of peoples who had to leave these lands.

The Value of Memory

We offer this cultural evening in the unmistakable setting of the places of the heart for so many descendants who can return to the lands of their ancestors. Keeping that connection alive is critically important.

Roots Tourism is more than a tourism adventure, it is also appreciating the stories of the local community. Paolo Malaguti offers us his vision in “Piero Fa la Merica,” his latest literary effort.

“Those like the Gevori call them the great-grandparents: they have two times nothing. For them, leaving, rather than a choice, is a plunge into a different, still unknown nothingness. Even if from the woods of Veneto to the forests of Brazil, the journey is so long. Especially by ship, especially in the late 19th century. Through the eyes of Piero, who is fifteen years old and has a lot on his mind, Paolo Malaguti recounts the epic and the loss of innocence of the Italians in the Americas: the rapacious gesture of building the world among unseen animals and lush plants, where the struggle with nature is a daily hand-to-hand combat. And the future a gamble.”
